MotorTrend recently went hunting for these little automotive "Easter eggs" in its long-term 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness. We're taking a closer look at what they found - and why these details fit the Outback so well.

Look Up - There's More Than a Brake Light Back There

One of the most entertaining discoveries is hiding around the rear spoiler and high-mounted brake light. Look closely and you'll find eight tiny Outback silhouettes, each carrying a different kind of adventure gear on the roof, including bicycles, surfboards and even a Christmas tree.

It's a small detail, but it fits the Outback perfectly. This is a vehicle built for weekends filled with bikes, camping equipment, kayaks, skis, pets and whatever else the next adventure calls for.

Subaru Even Thought About Your Dog

This might be our favorite. Subaru's connection with pets - especially dogs - is no secret, and designers incorporated that relationship directly into the 2026 Outback.

Near the rear taillights, you'll find small illustrations designed to give dog owners a surprisingly useful sense of the Outback's cargo space. One illustration indicates that a dog roughly 42.8 inches long can fit in the cargo area with the second-row seats upright. Fold those seats down, and the illustrated available length stretches to 75.9 inches.

On the opposite side, another illustration shows a 44.3-inch-tall dog standing upright in the cargo area. So, yes - Subaru essentially built a quick "Will my dog fit back here?" guide into the Outback.

Pop the Hood for a Piece of Subaru History

There's another Easter egg waiting under the hood, but this one isn't about camping, bikes or dogs. It's about Subaru history.

Near the front of the vehicle, you'll find two stamped messages: "Since 1966" and the same message in Japanese. The year is significant because 1966 marked the debut of Subaru's first horizontally opposed boxer engine in the Subaru 1000.

That early engine produced 54 horsepower. Six decades later, the 2026 Outback Wilderness uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter SUBARU BOXER engine producing 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque - a fun reminder of how far the technology has evolved while remaining part of Subaru's identity.

The Wilderness Has Plenty More to Discover

The hidden details aren't the only interesting things about the 2026 Outback Wilderness. Subaru equips it with 9.5 inches of ground clearance, standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, electronically controlled dampers, Dual-Function X-MODE, revised gearing and a 3,500-pound towing capacity.

Inside, the Wilderness features a standard 12.1-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Subaru also brought back easy-to-reach physical controls for frequently used functions - a practical touch for drivers who would rather press a button than dig through a touchscreen menu.

Some Easter Eggs Are Just for Fun - And That's the Point

Do tiny Outback illustrations make the vehicle drive better? No. Does having "Since 1966" stamped under the hood add horsepower? Unfortunately, also no.

But that's what makes details like these fun. They give owners something new to discover after they've already brought their Subaru home. And in the case of the dog measurements, Subaru even managed to turn an Easter egg into something genuinely useful.
